Part 1

Send Urianger my regards... and tell him to live somewhere less annoying next time.

Il Mheg, the Faerie Kingdom

Summary

✶ It's too bright here even for the First as Alisaie, Alphinaud and their companions Thancred and Minfilia arrive in a wooded dale. They're here to search for Urianger, who has made his home amongst the fae of Lydha Lran - who, in true fae fashion, are far more interested in playing tricks on them than helping them to find him. The group wander around lost in a bright mist for a while, until Thancred gets the Warrior of Light to help him find something he calls 'looking grass'. He explains this is a trick of Urianger's, and will help them to see the pixies who are no doubt watching them as he speaks.

✶ As expected, the group turn out to be surrounded by them. They appear in puffs of smoke, and cluster about the group. The twins cause something of a stir, with a pixie named Oul Sigun declaring them 'adorable'. This is probably not a good sign.

✶ Thancred's initial negotiations go about as well as can be expected in that nobody is turned into shrubbery, and the pixies agree to lift the veil they have cast over the fields in exchange for the group's assistance. The group split up to set to their tasks with Alisaie, clearly over this place already, required to search for a plank of wood with no wood grain. Alphinaud is expected to retrieve a garland that has been 'blown' into a tree.

✶ The pixies go on assigning all present menial tasks and playing pranks on them for quite long enough for everyone to get heartily sick of it. Alisaie feels they're being toyed with, and Alphinaud concurs. Ryne explains that the pixies are believed to be the spirits of children who died young, losing all their memories but retaining their love of play. She says that mortals have been trapped 'playing' by pixies for years, or even until their deaths. Alphinaud believes this makes them similar to ghosts, and Alisaie reminds him that they themselves exist only as 'souls without bodies'.

✶ Thancred believes they need to find a pixie who is amenable to reason who might be persuaded to let them go. The Warrior of Light has met such a pixie, as it happens - Feo Ul. Thancred suggests they summon Feo Ul and ask for aid.

✶ Feo Ul, when they finally appear, is absolutely incensed that it has taken this long for their 'Sapling' to think to call on them, and berates them furiously for it. Alisaie groans: another self-important little brat is exactly what they don' need right now. Alphinaud, however, is smirking - listening to Feo Ul browbeating the Warrior of Light, he says, reminds him of his childhood. This starts the twins to squabbling while Minfilia watches in concern and Thancred presumably prays for death.

✶ Finally placated, Feo Ul intervenes to tell the other pixies that the Warrior of Light is their mortal, and threatens Lyda Lran with the contents of their inventory if they don't behave. This frightens the pixies sufficiently that they agree to lift the enchantment - but only on condition that, while the rest of the group are reunited with Urianger, they get to keep on playing with the twins.

✶ Thancred tells the Warrior of Light they're going to need to make this quick, and Alisaie asks them to send her regards to Urianger - along with a heartfelt request that next time he's deciding where to live, to please pick somewhere a lot less annoying.

Notes

✶ The girl Alisaie has come to know as 'Ryne' is here referred to as 'Minfilia'. Her coloring has changed, too - where earlier memories have shown her to be a gray-eyed redhead, here her hair is fair, and her eyes glow an eerie blue - but she's still recognizably the same.

✶ Alisaie's remark about the group existing as 'souls without bodies' is entirely accurate - this is how every member of the Scions save the Warrior of Light ended up on this world, known ingame as The First, to begin with. Alphinaud, who is afraid of ghosts, is now logically impelled to be frightened of himself.

✶ Okay, so about the 'inventory' comment: in FFXIV, the Warrior of Light has an extended inventory managed by NPCs known as retainers. As these are NPCs and the First is an entirely different world, obviously it's not possible for them to show up there. On arriving in the hub town the Crystarium, inventory management is taken over by an errant pixie - this would be Feo Ul - who can command the retainers to do the Warrior of Light's bidding in their dreams. Thus, Feo Ul has seen everything the Warrior of Light has socked away and is not impressed. This is absolutely hilarious in the game and I've ruined it forever by explaining it, for which I apologize.

✶ The player-character Warrior of Light, who accompanies Alisaie, is seen as a humanoid shape made up of blinding white light surrounded by a rainbow corona, of indeterminate age, race and gender. None of their individual features are discernible, and though they can be seen to be speaking their voice cannot be made out.
