Part 1

I never understood why Grandfather gave his life that day. I thought that, if I came here, I would find the answers I needed.

Beneath a Star-Filled Sky

✶ It's a clear, starry night and Alisaie leaves the small, but busy military camp at Camp Overlook accompanied by the kobold child Ga Bu. A short distance from the camp, the two settle down on the crest of a rise to gaze at the skies.

✶ Unknown to Alisaie, her departure has been witnessed by the Warrior of Light, who catches up with them a short time later. Alisaie starts at their approach, but calms when she realizes who it is, and apologizes for leaving unannounced. She was afraid that the silent, twitchy Ga Bu was feeling unwelcome with the Maelstrom soldiers who man the camp, and though she was hoping he might come out of his shell in less uncomfortable surrounds, this sadly has not proved to be the case.

✶ Alisaie confesses to the Warrior of Light that she fears her experiences have not made her stronger, and that traveling to Eorzea, the land her grandfather gave his life to save, originally only left her feeling more angry and abandoned than ever. It was only when he revealed the truth behind the Calamity could she understand his reasoning, taking it upon herself as her own.

✶ She admits that though she has learned from them, she has not really enjoyed her travels, and has been left feeling helpless and frustrated by her inability to resolve even petty crises, or to protect the people she came to care for. Remembering her grandfather's words to her father before he left their homeland of Sharlayan for good - to ignore the plight of those one might conceivably save is not wisdom, it is indolence - has, however, served to strengthen Alisaie's resolve. That resolve, along with the desire to protect her family and friends, helped carry her through when she was tracking down the Warriors of Darkness.

✶ Fearing the conversation has become one-sided, she asks the Warrior of Light to tell her of their time in Ishgard. When they tell her of Alphinaud, she jokes that his recent maturation means she's finally starting to see him as an older brother.

✶ The following day, as the party prepare to leave Camp Overlook, Alisaie confides that she is worried for Ga Bu, who has not eaten or spoken and may not have slept, either. She entreats the camp commandant to take care of him and treat him kindly: he at least deserves the chance to recover. He promises her that he will, saying Ga Bu's actions the day before were the only thing that stopped the situation becoming worse.

✶ Alisaie bids farewell to Ga Bu, telling him she hopes he can remember 'them' as they were and that it's all right to grieve - and gets through to him, for a moment. He thanks her, and says he will remember, before falling silent again. Alphinaud consoles her, assuring her that her words have reached Ga Bu, and that he will recover in time; he also promises there will be a reckoning for those who have caused his suffering. Alisaie agrees wholeheartedly, and the party take their leave of the camp.

Notes

✶ Ga Bu was first encountered in this memory - a memory Alisaie is now aware must take place some time after this one.

✶ Alisaie's grandfather has somehow managed to explain why he died to save Eorzea to her, despite being dead at the time. Final Fantasy XIV, everyone.

✶ The player-character Warrior of Light, who accompanies Alisaie, is seen as a humanoid shape made up of blinding white light surrounded by a rainbow corona, of indeterminate age, race and gender. None of their individual features are discernible, and though they can be seen to be speaking their voice cannot be made out.
