I close my eyes, tell us why must we suffer
Release your hands, for your will drags us under
My legs grow tired, tell us where must we wander
How can we carry on if redemption's beyond us?

To ignore the plight of those one might conceivably save is not wisdom, it is indolence.

✶ Final Fantasy XIV: A Primer
Final Fantasy XIV is set on the world of Hydaelyn, known as the Source: a world which served as the blueprint for the creation of thirteen reflections, all worlds in their own right. It has two moons, Menphina and Dalamud; and Aldenard, Ilsabard and Othard are its most prominent continents.
The twin deities of Hydaelyn and Zodiark , representing light and dark, exist to keep one another in check. Below them The Twelve, a pantheon of benevolent deities representing various aspects and elements, are the Gods of the Great Races of Eorzea. The various city-states and the ethnic groups within them tend to take individual members of the pantheon as guardian deities. Not all the societies on the Source are religious, however - the Garleans are traditionally atheist.
The Beast Tribes worship individual guardian deities who have come to be known as Primals, and have lately learned to summon them thanks to the Ascians, a mysterious race who live outside of time and space. They have a hand in stoking many of the conflicts and clashes that bedevil the Source, and believe that passing on the secret of summoning the Primals will help to forment it.
The Source is suffused by magic, or Aether. It is most commonly and easily found in the form of crystals, but it is the Source's life blood, and of all living things. Aether can run low or exist in excess; it can be channelled and stored, drawn from the ground and from living beings; and it can become corrupted. A summoned Primal consumes vast amounts of aether, and thus needs to be destroyed to preserve balance. This does not prevent the Primal in question from being summoned again - provided that its worshippers can secure an adequate supply of crystals.
Eorzean history is divided into Astral and Umbral eras. Umbral eras mark times of Calamity. The seventh Umbral era started five years previous and leads into the present day, and was triggered when the Garleans attempted to invade Eorzea by bringing down Dalamud and crashing it into the continent, intending to lay claim to the ruined land in the disaster's wake.
Instead of colliding with the planet, Dalamud burst open as it neared its surface, and was revealed to have been created by the ancient, long-since fallen Allagan Empire as a prison to hold the elder primal Bahamut. Bahamut escaped the wreckage, and wholesale devastation was only averted when Sharlayan scholar Louisoix Leveilleur harnessed the power of the Twelve to temporarily recontain Bahamut. Louisoix himself vanished immediately afterward.
In the wake of the Calamity, surviving members of Louisoix's fraternity, the Circle of Knowing, joined a group known as The Path of the Twelve to form the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Honoring Louisoix's last wishes, the Scions have taken it upon themselves to watch over Eorzea, in the hope of containing the twin threats of the Primals and the Garleans.
Alisaie and her older twin, Alphinaud, are Louisoix's grandchildren and, following their coming-of-age and graduation from the prestigious Studium, the two set out against their father's wishes to learn the truth behind their grandfather’s disappearance. Alphinaud eventually joins the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, while Alisaie, already disenchanted with what she's found in Eorzea, initially sets out alone - determined to find her own path and break free from her brother's shadow. While travelling, Alisaie discovers an entrance to the ruins of Dalamud where, with the help of the player-character the Warrior of Light, she discovers her grandfather lives on as the Primal Phoenix, but is being held in thrall by the resurrected Bahamut. After freeing Louisoix from Bahamut's influence she, Alphinaud and the Warrior of Light join forces with Louisoix's spirit to see the elder primal laid to rest. Her actions in the ruins serve to trigger a series of events that leads to Alisaie, somewhat against her better judgement, throwing in her lot with the Scions.
✶ Alisaie Leveilleur
The guiding philosophy Alisaie abides by is one of compassion, justice and determination. She cares a whole lot, about everything, in a way that only a sixteen year old girl is capable of, and has yet to learn how to live with the contradictions and compromises of adult life. Her anger about the inaction of politicians, her inability to walk away when she sees injustice done, her desire to fling herself into campaigns of liberation - it's all because she cares too much to walk away and pretend that she's seen nothing. The hypocrisies she perceives in the world drive her absolutely crazy and she ranks inaction in the face of oppression as almost unforgivable. She simply doesn't understand how anybody could not care about how badly their actions affected others, and she isn't at all sure she wants to - and she isn't about to pretend that learning her friends and allies are also capable of such things won't change her mind about them.
Alisaie is not easily shocked, and at first glance seems more pragmatic than her higher-minded twin - but it's fairer to say that the Leveilleurs take it in turns to be the practical one than assume that she is entirely down to earth and he always has his head in the clouds. Alphinaud has a far better grasp on the intricacies of society, and understands that sometimes you simply have to learn to compromise your ideals and expectations to get the job done; Alisaie simply isn't very good at compromising on anything, her personal morals least of all. Her directness of approach and willingness to take matters into her own hands, for all it often makes her a diplomat's worst nightmare, also makes her invaluable when diplomacy fails.

- Eorzea, comprised of the city-states of Gridania, Limsa Lominsa, Ul'dah and Ishgard, is on Aldenard.
The powerful, imperialist Garlean Empire holds sway over most of Ilsabard. It also rules over two captured provinces, the formerly independent territories of Doma and Ala Mhigo.
Sharlayan, in Aldenard, is an independent city-state governed by scholars. A satellite community existed in Ishgard's Dravanian Hinterlands, but this is now abandoned.
