Part 1 | Part 2

Lest you forget, I made you a promise. I have no intention of meddling with your mission. I came only to observe.

The Wheel Turns

Summary

✶ Arriving back at the Crystarium, the Scions are approached by a tall, golden-eyed man in a heavy coat, who walks with a slight stoop. Alisaie demands to know who he is, but is warned off by Urianger, who recognizes him as a man who should be dead. The stranger introduces himself as Solus zos Galvus, founder of the Garlean empire - amongst others, under other names - and as Emet-Selch, an Ascian. Alisaie recognizes the name as one spoken of by Gaius Baelsar; Thancred as someone equal in rank to Lahabrea.

✶ When asked why he is here, Emet-Selch professes himself to be angry. The Scions' actions on the First have pushed the world back toward balance, hauling it back from the brink and preventing what he refers to as the Rejoining. Had mankind been content to live in idleness under the rule of Don Vauthry of Eulmore, all the conditions would have been met, but in the Scions' actions he sees carefully-laid plans in disarray.

✶ Thancred thanks Emet-Selch for confirming Urianger's theories on the workings of Calamities and suggests he walk away while he can - something Emet-Selch is disinclined to believe Thancred would let him do.

✶ He tells the Scions that he has thought better of simply allying with Vauthry and killing them all - those tactics ended poorly for Lahabrea - and try cooperation. He offers to aid them in their hunt for the Lightwardens, and lend them his strength if they need it. Alphinaud takes issue with this - he cannot believe the Ascians' motives have changed. Emet-Selch assures him his objectives remain unchanged, but doubts they know his motive. He suggests they seek common ground, pointing out he is immortal and can simply start again if he wishes. What he wants to know now is if their motives are truly incompatible.

✶ Urianger throws a card at Emet-Selch, revealing his presence to have been an illusion. Speaking for the group, he says that the proposal is under consideration, but the way he made it hardly seems very sincere. Emet-Selch cites reasonable precaution in the company of a known Ascian-slayer like the Warrior of Light, and takes his leave.

✶ Alisaie suggests the Warrior of Light get some rest: the Scions will handle reporting into the Exarch about events in Il Mheg. The group split up for a time.

✶ While the Scions are speaking with the Exarch, Emet-Selch reappears in the Solar. The Warrior of Light arrives just in time for him to start speaking, reiterating his promise that they would meet again soon and that he simply wishes to observe. Thancred at least is inclined to turn his offer of aid down flat, citing the suffering the Ascians have caused. Emet-Selch tells him the group would prove worthy allies should they succeed in eliminating the Lightwardens - worthy of bearing the burden of truth.

✶ With the Scions silent and unmoved, Emet-Selch claims to be saddened they have refused his olive branch. He suspects they will seek him out: difficult decisions await and they will surely need his help. He then vanishes, requesting they at least prove diverting to watch.

Notes

✶ It's Alexander! Give us a wave, Alexander. The man calling himself Emet-Selch will be immediately recognizable to any Tokyo-F observer who hasn't been living under a rock for the last year and change.

✶ Why is Urianger throwing cards at people? Does he think he's an X-Man? No, actually; he's an Astrologian, who use drawn cards as part of their array of healing powers. He's also Urianger, and generally approaches everything at right angles from everybody else.

✶ The player-character Warrior of Light, who accompanies Alisaie, is seen as a humanoid shape made up of blinding white light surrounded by a rainbow corona, of indeterminate age, race and gender. None of their individual features are discernible, and though they can be seen to be speaking their voice cannot be made out.
