Your friends were a disappointment. But you... you will entertain me, will you not?
In Crimson It Began
Summary
✶ Alisaie, Alphinaud, the Warrior of Light and a Lalafell soldier named Pipin are hiding outside an Imperial castellum, surveying the troops within, when they are interrupted by the sound of cannon fire, and a distant plume of smoke. Alisaie identifies it as coming from a place named Rhalgr's Reach. Alphinaud attempts to get in touch with the people stationed at the Reach via linkpearl, but their communications are jammed. Abandoning their plans to attack the castellum, the four agree to hurry back as quickly as possible.
✶ On the way to Rhalgr's Reach, the group run into a small party of wounded escapees from Rhalgr's Reach, including fellow Scions Krile and Arenvald, and M'Naago of the Ala Mhigan resistance. Krile tells Alphinaud that the encampment has fallen victim to a surprise attack by Garlean forces. Arenvald agrees to accompany the survivors to safety at Baelsar's Wall, while Krile plans to go back to the Reach - they'll need all the healers they can get.
✶ Pipin tells the others that reinforcements are on the way, and they may be able to hold the position if they can beat the Garleans back for long enough. The two groups part ways.
✶ The Warrior of Light leads the charge as the party fight their way into Rhalgr's Reach. The encampment is in chaos, with Imperial troops intent on perpetrating a massacre. Desperate to save who she yet can, Alisaie is horrified to realize that the Garleans are killing men and women who had already surrendered, as well as any non-combatants they can find.
✶ Informed by a wounded soldier that resistance leader Conrad Kemp and fellow-Scions Lyse and Y'shtola, have been taken deeper into the Reach by their attackers, the party redoubles their attempts to reach the heart of the encampment. They find Lyse being held captive by a Garlean officer, a native Ala Mhigan named Fordola rem Lupis, along with the unconscious Conrad and Y'shtola, who has been seriously wounded.
✶ After fighting off Fordola, Alphinaud and Krile see to the wounded. Fordola attempts to alert Zenos yae Galvus - the son of the current Garlean emperor, who is leading the attack - to this attempt to free their prisoners, only to be ordered to see to her men. Confused, she leaves, allowing Zenos to take over.
✶ Zenos, a giant of a man in heavy armor brandishing a bandolier of swords, confronts the Warrior of Light, Alisaie and Pipin. Claiming that he was 'disappointed' in whatever resistance Y'shtola and Lyse mounted before they arrived, he demands that the three of them provide him with more entertaining sport, and draws his sword. They fight back, with Alisaie rallying the others: that killing Zenos now would end all this. After no more than a few moments, however, Zenos claims boredom and launches a vicious attack that leaves both Alisaie and Pipin stunned. The pair can only watch as the Warrior of Light faces Zenos down alone.
✶ After a protracted fight Zenos declares himself bored of this challenge too, downing the Warrior of Light. Before he can kill them his sword is shattered by General Raubahn Aldynn, leading a column of reinforcements. Believing continued battle beneath him, Zenos retreats.
Notes
✶ The player-character Warrior of Light, who accompanies Alisaie, is seen as a humanoid shape made up of blinding white light surrounded by a rainbow corona, of indeterminate age, race and gender. None of their individual features are discernible, and though they can be seen to be speaking their voice cannot be made out.
✶ Though character names are used in the summary for the sake of comprehension, any viewers watching the memory will find most names remain inaudible. All references to the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, the Garlean Empire, and Ala Mhigo and the Resistance, however, can now be heard clearly.
✶ Zenos is awful, guys. He's just a dreadful human being and I don't like him. :(
