A blade like that is worth a fortune. Enough to buy a house and furnish it. Which you would know had you bothered to check the price.
The Sword in the Store
Summary
✶ Alisaie, her twin brother Alphinaud, and a companion whose face and form cannot be clearly made out have travelled to the city of Kugane, where they are met by three old friends: the diminutive Tataru; Yugiri, who has scales and a dragon-like tail; and Soroban, a humanoid tortoise. Seems that Elves aren't the only fantastical races her home world boasts.
✶ Most of the talking is done by Hancock, a sycophantic blonde man who wears his sunglasses indoors. Nobody seems to like him very much. He reveals that Alisaie and her companions were called here at short notice after reports that a woman named Yotsuyu, a former Imperial official, has been seen in the city - something worth noting as peculiar since not only is she supposed to be dead, everyone present saw her die in a collapsing building.
✶ The group are not the only ones who will be searching for Yotsuyu. The Garlean Empire has sent soldiers to look for her too.
✶ Alisaie goes out to gather information. At Hancock's request she meets with the so-called best information broker money can buy: Gyodo, a small, squeaky fish person, with whom she clearly has a history. He attempts to extort more money out of them before he'll give up the deets, but a few choice threats have him agreeing to cooperate.
✶ Gyodo informs the group that a woman answering Yotsuyu's description was seen in the company of an elderly samurai who was pawning an exquisitely-made katana - this is Gosetsu, a mutual friend. Gyodo offers to give up more information on what the Garleans are up to. Alisaie, rightly deciding he can't be trusted, goes with him to make sure he doesn't try and go back on his word.
✶ Things go smoothly with Gyodo and Alisaie meets up with the group again at the city docks. Notably, by the time they are reunited, Alphinaud has bought Gosetsu's katana from the pawnbroker. Poor Tataru gets horrible sticker shock when presented with the bill and informs Alphinaud that they will need to have Words on his return.
✶ In pursuit of Gosetsu and Yotsuyu, Alphinaud, Alisaie, Yugiri and the Warrior of Light head to sea with Soroban. Speaking to the sentries on a fortified island, they are informed that the Garleans have launched an attack on a group called the Confederacy, in hope of finding and retrieving Yotsuyu. During this conversation it is also revealed that the Garlean empire recently lost control over the country of Doma.
✶ The party decides to aid the Confederacy. Alisaie is very clearly spoiling for a fight, but Alphinaud says she has to stay behind with Soroban. Ugh, overprotective brothers suck.
✶ Alisaie takes the opportunity to remind Alphinaud he is notoriously bad at swimming when he declares he is going to swim his way into battle. Nonetheless he, Yugiri and the Warrior of Light swim away while Alisaie is stuck on the boat. Soroban clearly had his work cut out in keeping her there but with a colossal effort of will she actually stayed put through the fight and is reunited with the others once things quiet down.
✶ Gosetsu is there with Yotsuyu - a confused, childlike woman who seems to have no memory of her former life as an Imperial viceroy. The group clearly don't trust her, and Alisaie wastes no time in letting her know.
✶ Soroban suggests the Warrior of Light join him in business venture, and we return to the subject of that katana. Alphinaud turns out to be entirely ignorant of how much these things can cost, and Alisaie finally informs him that he could have bought a house and furnished it for the price he agreed to pay for it. Though she's not entirely unsympathetic, she's clearly amused by her maturer, more responsible brother's misstep.
Notes
✶ The player-character Warrior of Light, who accompanies Alisaie, is seen as a humanoid shape made up of blinding white light surrounded by a rainbow corona, of indeterminate age, race and gender. None of their individual features are discernible, and though they can be seen to be speaking their voice cannot be made out.
✶ Though character names are used in the summary for the sake of comprehension, viewers watching the memory will find all names aside from Alisaie's and Alphinaud's are inaudible, having been replaced by static.
✶ The names of all locations, and that of the Garlean Empire, are likewise inaudible.
